According to tradition, each month of the year is assigned one or more birthstones. Each stone is said to have particular "magical properties" which are highlighted in the month assigned to it. In addition, each calendar month is given a particular flower which is also a common gift to receive on one's birthday, and symbollic of the gifts of nature in that month.
